Has anyone engaged a financial advisor to help them through the maze of tax, NI, foreign earnings & general financial advice prior to heading off over the horizon? I'm hoping to track down an advisor who knows something about the "sell up & sail" option - maybe even one who has been there & done it! Any recommendations?

Many thanks,
Ruth

We're looking too !

There was a guy at the blue water seminar who was very good on the investment part, we are hoping ( may have found- will know tomorrow) some else more local (North) to us.

Our local accountants in Carlisle had someone who sailed dinghies and was very enthusiastic but unfortunatly not as expert as we would like.

We have been talking to a couple of people today, with some success. Our local accounts and their dinghy sailor are getting better, they are seeming to see our questions and plans as an interesting project and are starting to be quite useful.

If you have someone that you use already I suggest talking to them and then let them investigate expertise through the accountants networks.

Tell me if you find anything useful.

When are you planning to head off?

I might be able to help. Basic information is that I have sold up, but not sailed yet.

My firm (solicitors) can give financial and legal advice. Also act as attorneys.

Accountant, with whom we work closely, can give accounting advice.

Best news is that we are experienced in working with ex-pats who can only communicate by e-mail. (Got clients in S. Africa, India and on oil rigs in far east.)

Should have said that our financial advice includes full stockbroking service including collection of dividends / interest and sending on to bank account(s) as instructed.

Service is on a fee paying basis - no commissions involved.

Thanks Ruth for asking this question - I was loggin on to ask the same.

It's obviously difficult, and I have just emailed the Association of Independent Financial Advisers asking them for any clues. All the search engines are postcode based - not a lot of use if you're trying to find a specialism and won't mind the postcode once you're hull down!

Any and all thoughts on this subject would be really helpful.

Find out all you can from the internet, the local libary and books about residence, domicile, tax, off-shore investments and come up with some ideas and tentative conclusions that suit your present and desired future situation and ONLY THEN contact a reliable financial advisor. If he(or she) confirms your conclusions you just may be on the right track. Then take a step by step approach.
Good Luck!
