Finally done it! Put a deposit down on a boat that is. She is an old Morgan Giles 30, wants a bit of TLC but not too bad. So, barring a completely disasterous survey, I should be sailing by the end of April! (Once I've bought flares, lifejackets, first aid kit etc etc, plus whatever else falls off the first time I go out!)

I was at this stage a year ago. You have just completed the cheapest bit! But the spending is fun too; lovely boat, I am sure you will have a lot of good sailing in her. Hope you keep us informed of your progress. Regards, Becky

So you just bought a hole in the ocean. Now you pour large sums of money in to it, just like the rest of us!

Yes - it is a financial hole in the ocean - but doesn't it give you the best ROI in terms of grins. If we spent that much on the house I'd begrudge it - let alone the car ! Plainly chandlers and boatyards have noticed we're all softies about our boats !

G'day Gareth,

This is the first lesson in "How to make a small fortune"

Start with a big one and buy a boat.......

You end up with a small fortune.

But consider all the nice things you will learn, how to remove antifoul, how to paint it back on again, how to rip sails so you can buy more, how to remove stains, how to clean bilges and blocked toilets, oh the list just goes on and on, what fun............

Avagoodweekend and good luck to you, I'm sure will have a ball [and chain].

Welcome to the Mad Mad boating world.......

Sailing by the end of April..... LOL.... even if she is the most perfect boat in the world you will just want to do 'Some little job' that will take you at least twice the time & 10 times the budget.

I did the jump in September last year on an old Moody, she was at an excellent price, but has cost a small fortune to get her back shipshape.
You can budget for all the big items, new rigging, anti-foul, deck fittings, insurance, mooring fee, etc. but its all the little bits that seem to build up, like charts, flares odd bits of string etc. etc.

I will do a list on the costs one day just to frighten myself & keep sailing.

Yup as all the other boaty enthusiasts have said there goes the overdraft!
BUT what a sense of satisfaction and joy, no feeling like it when she goes into the water the first time and you take her out for a sail. It was very selfish I know but I did the deed all alone, can't really explain but better than sex.

Any help in locating best prices for kit or technical problems, just post on the Forum & there is bound to be someone who can help.

Have fun & let us know how you get on.

One piece of advice... Live with what you've got for the 1st season, and just sail the boat.. dont bother with to much maintainance unless its unavoidable..just get out and enjoy it!
