After a long time putting it off a significant birthday presented the ideal opportunity to be bought a drone.

Loads of App download, software updates, youtube viewing, scratching of head and sh1tting of pants before finally plucking up the courage to get airborne.

It's not very exciting I'm afraid but goodness me aren't they easy to fly. Genuinely the first attempt unedited.

A few more hours before I'm happy over water.

Henry :)

Very good for first attempt, I have bought a P3P which I really need to go and fly but somehow keep putting it off, now you have given me some inspiration. I have been too busy flying my helicopters.

Is this the way for future CCTV security, a few motion detectors and when triggered off goes the drone to catch them in the act you could even carry a LED spotlight to put the wind up them

This DJI 4 seems to be all about GPS security so it doesn't fly off over the horizon. The problem seems to come when people rush off and fly them before they've locked into the satellites and settled themselves down.

Early days and lots still to learn but very positive so far.

First proper video is underway :)

Awesome! It raises the competitive stakes nicely when the undisputed forum vidéo grande master (non drone chapter) gets a drone!:encouragement:
Yep it is amazing how easy it is to fly them.
It remains just as easy at sea.
Remember to turn off the geofence if you shoot the boat moving, else the thing stops when it gets 200m or whatever from the take off point. The menus to find these settings are not super intuitive like iPhone/Samsung/garmin et al.
Remember also your house is quite near Heathrow!
Happy 30th birthday too!

To much Henry, not enough Porsche. It is important to have balanced content in a video to get top marks :)

Look forward to future episodes!!

But a little harder to find them when they come down unexpectedly...

If the telemetry is working properly after they go out of sight you should be able to get their last GPS fix and walk up to within yards of it using a smartphone. Not possible over water! :)

I'm not sure about all that :)

I had a second flight which is going to be a little Facebook post for 911V. Death by drone but fun all the same. Like all video techniques the trick is to balance things out with standard footage and other tools like the slider.

I need to get the direction thing mastered, trying to remember which way you're facing / the controls work. Hand to eye stuff is simple enough once you've got the old girl moving in the right direction. I'm doing everything in manual mode and then I'll introduce the automated set pieces once I'm more confident.

Good tip about the geofence. Isn't there a "follow me" option in there somewhere?

Anyway, really pleased at how far they have come since I last had a toy helicopter. The stuff I shot on my 2nd flight would have been £20k and a camera crew a couple of years ago.

Happy 30th Henry. Nice pressie, and looking forward to seeing Rafiki on vid when you practice on the Hamble
Love the Porkers. Nice to see a 928. Drove hundreds of mikes in one when first launched. I was ride and handling at Jag, and was fighting suspension compliance versus steering response. Happy days!

Flights 2 & 3 edited to make something a bit more watchable :)

You might need to watch it on Youtube rather than through the embedded player to get the most out of the 4k resolution. I can't believe that my editing package allows me to take advantage of 4k and that youtube hosts it !!

Anyone who thinks a quad is easy to fly, will find it equally easy to lose.

I'm not sure ease of flying and losing it are related. I still have the electronic stabilisers on and am very much taking it one step at a time. The great thing about a forum like this is taking advice from others.

If you have any tips or pearls of wisdom please don't hold them in :)

I've a very long way to go before I consider myself anything other than a novice.

I learned as much from watching YouTube videos as I've done from flying, crashing, and getting it stuck up a tree.

This one's bit of a gem:
