Hi. I notice around the place more boats being fitted with sacrificial anodes on their fins. how beneficial is this? I put a shaft anode on my boat two years ago which has not eroded at all so I wm taking it off this week while we are out for pre summer scrub etc.

The placement of anodes is a measured science. Every design of boat and every individual boat within a design has its own little quirks.

It is not good at all to over anode a boat. (Or not have enough for that matter too.)

It is impossible to say with the information provided, but a steel keel with a copper antifoul and possibly brass outlets and stainless keel bolts may possibly provide enough electrolytic current to require anodes.

Best to talk to a surveyor and see if either a surveyor can, or otherwise recommend someone with experience in anode placement.

I met a surveyor once who was qualified in making such judgements, however his skills were not often required in this field. He also usually monitored the boats that he did inspect each time they were lifted, as well as the mooring and marina locations.
