Filling voids in wood

The varnished wooden gunnel at the rear of the boat is made by laminating two wooden strips with the join in a vertical direction. There is a void (about 3mm) between the strips at some points and the filler is cracked and coming away. How do I seal this neatly to prevent rot or is it best left open and filled with varnish where the lodged water can dry off. I tried epoxy glue but made a mess.

Was it just epoxy glue you used or did you mix it with a filler? eg microfibres or something similar. If you mask off either side of the cracks with either masking tape or parcel tape then coat the inside of each crack with neat epoxy. Mix up a fairly stiff paste the fill your cracks with this using a square edged wooden spatula. This should give you a fairly tidy finish.
