Your not doing anything wrong, the boat is dying oput and shrinking. Sme people let the boat get wet and allow it to swell before doing the final fill and paint, You will have problems, I've seen sikaflex used, but when the wood swells, the sikaflex then shows as raised lines. I don't know of a solution, apart from letting the wood swell then filling again.

Try Traditional Boat Supplies at Beccles in Suffolk - They have all sort of materials for wooden boats and even sell pre-mixed red lead putty as well as the red lead powder.

A product known as Jeffries Marine Glue used to be a pre-prepared underwater seam filler for timber. It is not what you might call a glue, but more of a stiff putty without the drawbacks of putty. Excellent adhesion and flexibility..I don't know if it is still available now, but an old chandlers may still have the odd tin. Available in various colours.

I thought jeffries marine glue was for caulking decks, in fact I'm sure it was, unless they also made a seam sealer. Could be wrong of course.

Cheers John. I went to the chandlers at Galmpton and he said use sikaflex but I don't want to. I'll try and get the proper stuff. By the way fitted new blakes seacocks last weekend. I'll mail you with an update!

I'm going to keep on his good side! Although not many chandlers anywhere I have been at least, have much of a clue about wooden boats.

I agree. In fact all the people I have come across at Galmpton have been good sorts. I don't really know the west country as we have sailed mainly in the solent. but we bought Amanda Loiuse (hillyyard 9t) in october and the storage was paid for 6 months. Seems a different attitude in the west. A chap called Julian Mann is doing some work for me. He,s a good chap.
