Please excuse my ignorance, I'm from the "wrong" side of the Channel :o

Can someone tell me the accepted protocol for filing a passage plan with a UK south coast CG station? Do you call on C16 to be given a working channel or do you call directly on a working channel?

If the latter, what are the normal working channels for Falmouth, Brixham, Portland, Solent and Dover? (For passage plans)

Admiralty List of Radio Signals and other sources give a whole list of obscure channels for each station, the majority I'm guessing almost never get used.

Jersey Coastguard don't really like people using C16 unless urgent. Many sources still quote C25 as well as C82 as working channels for Jersey but in reality they gave up on C25 years ago as they couldn't persuade the french fishing fleet to chatter elsewhere. They do still have the capability to broadcast on C25 having said that but I've only heard them once in recent years after equipment failure forced them to.

Call on Ch16.. they will redirect you if so needed;Solent being so busy likes to keep 16 free so will redirect you unless an emergency, but its fine to call on 16 first. In fact I think they will be delighted its not another radio check ;)

TRs seem of little use. CG don't check you've arrived, nor do they expect you to tell them, nor will they do anything if you don't let them know you've arrived. They are merely recorded in case there is a subsequent problem notified to them by you or others.

It's not like filling an aviation flight plan which if you fail to close, triggers a response.

Jersey Coastguard are always encouraging boaters in the CI area to log TR's with them, in fact they use the SOLAS regs to claim that is a legal requirement.

As said, a failure to check back in doesn't trigger any response until a shoreside contact reports you missing. But when they do it helps enourmously with estimating your position to start a search.

Thanks for the advice!

"Passage reports and radio checks to St Peter Port Radio on Channel 20, not 16 or 12."

"Jersey Coastguard will receive, log and when requested amend traffic reports (TRs) received from pleasure vessels on VHF 82 or by telephone on +44 (0) 1534 447705."

And those two are supposed to be working more closely to present a united Channel Island Coastguard!

I will raise the issue in my annual chat with St Peter Port Harbourmaster in a month or two.
