I read that Capt Cook and the like used to have a fiddler on board to keep the sailors active and it was vital for entertainment - cos there was no radio, no alamancs to read, no cameras, books cost fortune and you couldn't even shout at the radio when people do radio checks cos all the radio check would have had to be done by semaphore.

So i wonder if any forumites play the fiddle? and if so - do they have any favourite tunes? and more to the point er where can i scrounge the music?

Oh,and the "Can you play "over the hills and far away"?" gag has already been done. Well, it has now.

Yes but the fiddler was there to help them keep time whilst sweating up the anchor or suchlike whereas nowadays perfectly acceptable to wear ipod whilst operating windlass remote

Oh, i disagree, and traditional methods far better, martime heritage, rubbishy synthetic music, etc blah.

And mainly cos of course i wd be pratting about with the fiddle while you are hunting for the remote, fixing the lectric and such...

Matt had trouble finding someone to help him with his fingering..........
