Fid diameter....

You ideally need a 5.5mm fid, like this - Selma Splicing Fids, available individually

And, ideally, only try to splice new rope!

The length is more important. Samson braid have a web site which gives good instructions.

Selma fids are good but have one fault. They are not made from tube but from rolled metal, leaving a join where a thread from the rope can get caught. A big improvement is to very carefully silver solder the join, using the minimum amount of filler.
