I'm thinking of taking the boat to Kiel and the family + dog joining me there, has anyone any experience of driving there from The Hook of Holland or Esbjerg and what the relative merits of each route?

There was a ferry guide in the paper 10 days ago which I have.

Esbjerg is an 18 crossing and cost £289 (car plus 4) then a 2+ hour drive to Kiel.
Hook of Holland is a 6 hour crossing costing £118 (car plus 1) and £43 for an overnight cabin for 2. Then 6 hours drive to Kiel.

If you want to go car-less, you can go as a foot passenger to Esbjerg, and then short train ride to Fredericia and 5 min walk to the marina. Found this very convenient, and the sailing in that area is excellent.

I've done the drive from Oostende to Kiel non stop after the crossing, started from home at midnight then after pick ups and the drive to Ramsgate, the only planned rest was the ferry trip. Very tired at the end but quite an enjoyable trip otherwise. Still got the maps for the area if you want them. Hook of Holland route may be cheaper but the long drive after might be hard work. Roads were good but the approach to Kiel by road when you're tired and desperate to find the marina isn't exactly intuitive so plan the route carefully, but be ready for diversions. I'd go for the longer trip by sea and shorter drive but cash would make the difference there to me. Wouldn't personally bother with a cabin or stopover on the longer drive, just rest during the crossing
p.s. They don't seem to know it over there, but they all drive on the wrong side of the road

I ran the prices earlier and Ebjerg was coming in at £340 return for 4, and Hook of Holland £250 so by the time you factor in fuel and stop for meal, there's probably not a lot of difference costwise between these two. Ostend is an interesting idea, only an extra hour driving on t'ther side but also an extra hour getting to Ramsgate.

The Ostend-Ramsgate ferry stopped sailing about a year ago.

The cheapest crossing will always be Dover-Calais. Kiel is 8 hoursish from Calais plus stops.

Dover-Calais would be my preferred option too.
Cheapest ferry - other options too (Eurotunnel).

Provided you can travel on a Saturday or Sunday the trip is not that onerous either.
The motorways in Holland and Germany are very good (no speed limit in Germany either).
Ages ago, I did Rostock-Ghent in just over 6 hours.Calais-Kiel is only a tad further.
