In 1979 :D

There's yet another attempt to stop the poor old Duke of Lancaster rusting completely away. Sad really, it was an interesting concept that slowly slithered away due to the cost of dealing with safety issues & the Council are alleged to have been "obstructive" in stopping several proposals for its use. Having said that, a serious fire on board could easily become a megga disaster.

I wish you luck in removing the thousand tons of concrete holding it upright. Moving it is not an option, cutting it up for scrap in situ might work but the H&S & pollution considerations of that will more than exceed the cost of the scrap. These are issues that were not thought of in 1979.

Housing the homeless for the council might work, but the Council's objection to most uses is the difficuty of getting emergency services to the site & the difficulties of any emergency evacuation.

It sounds an ideal..

....concentration housing project/estate for all those AS households who make life hell for their ordinary human neighbours.
'We are moving you to a recently refurbished large apartment with coastal views, as you have trashed this very ordinary HA/rented property, which must be completely gutted.:)?:

C ourse, they might get together to cut whole thing up to sell to the scrappies, which would keep them off railways, church roofs and out of sub stations-shame really they could/would not read the warning signs re hazardous waste, expolsive/toxic/ compartments, but it's Nature's way, and we must improve our position in the Darwin Awards-the USA have such a lead and LV's game attempt is not enough ;>)

Tidewaiter 2,

with your plan all the way !

Seriously, 'raise funds for restoration to her former glory'...well it's nice to have dreams I suppose; they can't even do that for the much smaller & more historically notable paddle steamer 'Ryde' at Whippingham, upriver from Cowes - though 'PS Medway Queen' which was there for a few years is now being restored with lottery money, after a real struggle inc several sinkings.

At least it has stayed upright so launching the lifeboats shouldn't be a problem...

We should try and sell it to the Afghan Navy, it has all the characteristics of the previous attempt to sell them Sir Ewart Hodgson's flagship the "Saucy Mrs Flobster" as chronicled by Beachcomber.

Leave the gate unlocked on a weekend.... Scrappies will have it away by Monday.

.........then batten down the hatches & drop a few canisters of Zyklon B in.
