Today I altered a ferry reservation with DFDS Ferries (Dieppe to Newhaven, Tel=0800 917 1201), and was offered a 20% reduction on their normal price because I phoned them rather than making alterations via their Web site. I have no idea why they are offering such a telephone discount, or how long it will last, but it's surely worth knowing for those of us who travel to France a lot by car. Every little helps?

I regularly use DFDS from North Shields to IJmuiden and have given up trying to understand their pricing policy. Sometimes things are cheaper online, sometimes by phone. Early booking discounts some and go and come back again. Car plus three return was £320 last autumn, quoted at £650 (four months in advance) for Easter, £450 the week before last.

When I was regularly using the cross Channel ferries I used a Motorsports specialist who had a deal with most ferry operators.

Fares were usually half of listed fares, but you were expected to travel overnight, which, in fact, suited us very well.

IIRC, around 2008, the last time I used the service, a return Dover/Dunkirque was around £70 for a 35 cwt panel van plus up to 5 passengers.

Sometimes we would sneak into the 'Chauffeurs Camions' restaurant and get whatever we wanted for about four quid.

The deals are there........................

In my gliding days similar deals were available for taking trailers to France - often overnight, as you say.

When I used to tow the dinghy over to Europe to race always used The “Caravan Deals” very early morning sail times but heavily discounted to get the boats full and slack times,
