Hi Guys,

The cooling stream has thinned to almost nothing and the impeller is fine. Not keen to take off the head. Will a flush with fernox be OK?

This engine seems to clog up the telltale hole very easily and your problem may not indicate anything more than this. before launching into a chemical cleaning, it may pay to remove the rubber hose and poke through the stub with a wire or small drill - something I do to mine at the end of every season.

Any limescale remover that contains hydrochloric acid, like Harpic, will certainly clean out any limescale deposits - but it's absolutely critical that it doesn't get inside any part of the engine other than the waterways, or it will ruin the bearings in a matter of minutes, and it must not left in the engine any longer than necessary to unblock the scaled-up areas. It's therefore essential the engine is kept upright during the flushing process, and then run for a good while immediately afterwards to ensure all the chemicals are thoroughly rinsed out.

I agree with the above suggestion to check that it is not just the telltale that is partly blocked.

Fernox DS3 is IMHO a good choice of descaler if you are going to try a chemical flush. It's based on sulphamic acid which is classed as a weak acid so not as aggressive as a hydrochloric acid solution. I'm not sure it is as readily available as it used to be but should be stocked by plumbers merchants.
Use it as a moderately hot solution.

"Disclean" like some other brick cleaners is hydrochloric acid based, and they claim more concentrated than others. Use it with caution it will attack more than just the scale!

You could consider using Rydlyme
