This whole fender thing has got me thinking....

I will be honest I am having dinner on the quay at a rather larger sof harbour unfortunatley bymyslef so I have no choice but to surf the net !

This marina has I guess over 1000 boats most of which are far more valuable than the average Thames boat BUT they nearly all have their fenders out, big ones small ones round ones square ones and ones with holes in there is even a superyacht with the whole portside dangling freely...

So my question, who hangs what and when ?

Fenders down when moored as protection against the item moored against (quay or boat) and also the chance of anyone coming too close on the other side - especially NBs in Abingdon, and a boat on the adjacent finger. Travelling however, up they come except when approaching a lock.

Ian

You have a lovely steel boat with wide decks and lifting the fenders is, I would venture to suggest, somewhat easier on your boat than many others.

I promise to try harder with my next boat! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If you have a crappy looking boat then why bother pulling in the fenders when underway. If, however the boat is the dogs danglies and you are well proud, then you pull the bloody things out of the way.

It's all to do with showing off really. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If your idea was a rope linking all the sausage type fenders together through the bottom eye so you could pull them all up from the cockpit I used to do that and found that the rope inevitably drooped into the water on the mooring and over a week or so looked disgusting with all the crud it picked up. We've now changed to big ball type which wouldn't fit on the side decks of our Ocean 30 anyway so don't bother.

I saw a rib going up the river the other day, fenders out!

couldn't help wondering what that was about, (and chuckling a bit) a rib is just one big fender isn't it?

No guarantees; when i lived in Reading a NB came down when the Kennet was in spate and actually burst one of my fenders and used it to create a massive smear down the side of the boat!

No debate over which looks better. Mind you, we expect nothing less of a gentleman of your experience....

"Left hand down a bit!!"

(The Navy Lark).

That show (The Navy Lark) actually ran until 1977!

I can remember listening to it on Sundays as a kid.

I have just ordered some cds of it from Amazon.

glad you bought that up I was saving hoods / canvas for the morning .... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif ok enough from me the Pernod has gone to my head

Have no problem with retrieving fenders on coastal as to leave them out could end up with waves slamming them into windows.

The Upper Thames to me is a harbour, when I come into Teddington I put them out, and when I leave Teddington going downstream I take them in.

Rest of the time, I try to enjoy the boat! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
