Following a recent thread and comment by SWMBO when and where.

SWMBO was surprised during recent hot day now wind 1 hour passage on leaving port I said just flip them up on deck and secure mooring lines. Do not bother we will be there in an hour.

She was horrified..

Often single handed fenders stay out till I leave the river, yet with crew they are in as soon as we are clear of berth.

They are then stowed in a locker off the deck, not towed behind across the stern (am I the only one who thinks that looks ugly).

What are your views? With me its when and where practical...

If I have the crew which most of the time I do then everything is stowed when departing. When solo I prepare well in advance and only flip them out at the last minute.

I do, however, keep fenders instantly accessible for dangling should the need arise.

Have to agree, fenders left dangling out look bad and the collection on the stern even worse.

I'd always put them away just in case we get a bit of breeze and we fancy a sail. It also frees up the side deck, incase we need to go forward or someone goes over the side, and it saves them getting lost or a line going over the side :)

With 8 large fenders and full lockers they hang over the rear.

Sailing is about practicalities and enjoyment. Leaving the boat in the marina, cleaning it and polishing it is about being pretty!

more or less +1

if I had room, I'd stow them, but if they are not out, then they live on the cabin floor or on a bunk and if the boat is full of people and kit, then there's no where else for them to go except hanging out the back. sad, but a fact.

No you're not - there are standards ;) !! The plus side is that I seem to have a steady supply of replacement fenders and I haven't had to actually BUY one in years.

Serious question though; do people dangle their fenders over the back because they're feeling lazy and it's easiest, or because with a lot of boats the aft cabin(s) take up what was previously locker space and there's nowhere else?

That's a sign of a boat without decent lockers, (so lots of berths), and a need for lots of fenders. Aka a charter boat, especially if the crew are all wearing lifejackets.

Our sausage ones go away in the cockpit locker but the two big ball ones are tied on the stern so we have quick access if needed without having to go diving a locker. Ugly over the stern - yeah maybe a bit - but I guess that is a matter of opinion and never really bothered us.

standards? yes I have some, but they are my standards! One of the joys of sailing is being to get away and do what you like with who you like. I don't really care whether my standards are up to anyone elses! However, I do agree that they are ugly hanging out and it is a perpeptual irritation to me but one I can do little about at times.

'specially if the boat's a Sadler 32, the smallest side deck in the world!:)

intrestingly (or maybe not) enough the RNLI on their ALB secure their fenders around their stern rails.

Must depend on the station; I don't think there were any there when I went out on the Fishguard Lifeboat.

Personally I don't have a problem with fenders over the stern, especially on boats with sugar-scoop swim platforms. In cold waters, fender storage seems as good a use for them as any!

If the sight of a couple fenders or an incorrectly displayed flag offends its time to get a life!

Sure, but thinking someone's a numpty is not the same thing as being offended :)

Thinking someone else is a numpty doesn't raise my blood pressure at all. And I have no intention of rushing over to berate them for it, so they needn't be upset either. No harm done :)

(If someone has just one fender out, or a warp trailing, I'd probably let them know if I'm within hailing distance. Those are presumably an oversight, and the warp in particular could cause them a problem.)
