Has anyone any experience of fender skirts?

Do they really protect the gel-coat from fender scuffing or are they magnets for grit and even more effective at scuffing than fenders. Can anyone say from personal experience please?

They also seem extraordinarily expensive for what they are (OK, everything marine is more expensive than the identical land based article) any thoughts on economical sources welcome.

Try using Boob Tube!! material. A stretch, ribbed fabric as used to be in fashion for ladies tops a couple of years ago. Bought by the metre (cheap), it does not need hemming and comes in a variety of colours and diameters. If anything they seem to polish up the topsides rather than scuffing and my faded grimy fenders look half decent again.
