Sunday, 4 August is the date for celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of RAF Felixstowe, with ceremonies, a parade and an air display over the sea abeam the Town Hall. I was wondering if there will be the opportunity to anchor outside the display area as at Clacton (22/23 August). The latest information about Felixstowe is:
Flying Schedule (as of Tuesday 9 July - maybe subject to change)
1500 Catalina Flying Boat G-PBYA
1512 Trig Aerobatic Team - Pitts Special S-1D
1526 RAF Sea King
1543 Cessna 305C Bird Dog G-PDOG and Auster
1555 Yak52 and ME108
1612 Spitfire
The overall schedule is:
■ 11am - Church service at St John’s Church, Orwell Road.
■ 12.30pm – Parade from the Spa Pavilion to the steps of Felixstowe Town Hall.
■ 3pm – Air Display, weather permitting, over the sea, opposite the Town Hall.
A spokeswoman for the town council said: “Everyone is invited to watch the parade from Undercliff Road West or the promenade or Wolsey Gardens.”
Sponsors are currently being sought to help with the cost of the air display.
The town council has agreed to underwrite the event to £6,000.
It is hoped the Science Museum will loan the Schneider Trophy – a worldwide high-speed race challenge which was won by crews from RAF Felixstowe three times – for the weekend so it can be put on public display.
A Naval Aviation Exhibition is also being held at the Felixstowe Museum from March 31 to October 27 as part of the anniversary celebrations.
