Features of other forums - adopt their approach??

I'll ignore the colour scheme of the new Jeanneau forum for now!!!

In order to read and post threads on the Jeanneau forum you must register - this is not so on this (YBW) forum - anyone can read.

On sites such as Moodyowners and World Cruising then there are some areas which are priviledged to registered members only.

Would it be a good idea to adopt the Jeanneau approach (or something in between) on this forum so we get rid of all these anonymous (trolling)users???.

I have no particular view - just wonder what others think.

Lurkers are no problem.

The level of anonimity allowed is just a consequence of wanting a relaxed regime which respects the privacy of those who who wish to protect it.

The number of 'bad apples' is, I would suggest, very small and they tend to get short shrift. Trolling is something every forum has to handle in it's own way and I think our forumites are generally robust enough to cope.

Can't see any advantage in changing.

I was only seeking views - looks like the "Nays" have it.

I'm going back to polish my transom in the nice sunny weather here in the Med /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

ybw.com is not run as a private club so it is not in our interests to close off the main forums - we want to encourage more participation and have been successful in doing that to-date. A broach hopefully encourages a diversity of views and stronger knowledge base.

However certain types of forum been set up as registered users eyes only. And we have run a limited number of forums, mostly to assist specific groups in organised events, for subsets of the registered user base.

We don't say yes to every proposal but if people have ideas for how we can expand the range of forums on offer here we will always consider them. However do expect to see the main forums remain free to view (although you now need registration to allow searches).

I reckon forums should be open for all to read freely and without the need for registration. Over the years, I've found that forums are often valuable sources of product information, and a Google "Groups" search can be very informative. If I had to register in order to read posts, I'd find it a bit of a pain.

But there's no problem with having to register in order to be able to post, that seems like a common-sense requirement.

If you are referring to the anon users on the 'whos online' list -then many are registered forumites at work or on other cookie protected Pc's. My internet security package at home does not like cookies and so if I am reading the forum I am listed as a "anonymous" user, I only bother to log in if I want to post.
