My Fax machine packed in last night, so i am going out this morning to buy a new one..

Can anyone recommend a particular make and model that i should look at?

Anybody particulary impressed by one recently?

Thanks...

Alistair...

Be carefull. Last one we bought cost a fortune in ink and you could only get it by ringing a number. BT. I think. Anyway it broke after about twelve months. So that was the best end to it.

I would get the HP 6110. About £230. Had one 6 months, very happy (except I paid £400 - they have come down since).

Reason is, it is home colour photocopier, printer, fax machine, scanner. Faxing is done the traditional way, it gives a paper printout and a sent recipt, which i prefer.

For a cheap home unit the colour photocopying is excellent.

Unlike some of the all-in-ones (eg Lexmark) this machine works whehter or not connected to the PC, or if the PC is turned off. So you can copy/fax instantly. Some of these types only work if the puter is booted up, which is a pain if you just want a quick photocopy.

It also prints double sided, reduces/enlarges, darkens/lightens, mirror image photocopying, sheet feeder or glass plate for the original, reads digicam chips, etc etc

The fax is for business, so yes hadyn i do go through a lot of ink, and its bloody expencive.

I think a trad. fax is all i want as i have a canon bubble jet colour printer connected that the pc all the time.
Although the Hp 6110 does sound good.

Am heading in to Pc world shortly to have a look.

Re: vote for HP

Ah, if for business get NEC NEFAX545 with largest memory upgrade. Can send the same fax to zillions of numbers, receive zillions of pages into memory, never ever jams paper. Most important, when it scans into memory (which it has to do, to send same fax to many numbers) it is very fast, the sheets whoosh through. Mine is 7 years old and has several hundred thousand miles on the clock (especially in the late 90s, before everyone got email). The business, imho. I guess they dont even make it any more but get the latest version of it.

seperate modem on the PC straight into wall socket.

when faxes come in that you don't want they a zapped and thsu no wasted ink and teh ones you want can be printed or just filed without using any ink

We have one pc with two modems, one for fax and two for internet

If you can avoid the fax going through, or even being connected to you computer you will have fewer problems.

Re: vote for HP

Thanks for all the repies and suggestions.

And the Winner is>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>............................The HP6110

Thanks jfm.. It certainly seems like a decent piece of kit. Nice and neat.

One question, can you turn the machine off, at the end of the night and still be able too recieve faxes? Or do you need to leave the power on all the time?

Cheers All.

Re: vote for HP

You gotta leave it on, but it has a sleep mode that it reverts to after an hour of non use, where all the lights go out and it kind of sleeps, then wakes up if you press a button or a fax comes in

Re: vote for HP

Ooooer there should be a desktop icon put there by the install routine that gets to all the functions, and a tiny icon bottom right. But I set it as default so just pressing print from MS Word should do it. Dunno what's up. Mine is USB connected and non networked. Play around a bit, can't be much. Try colour photocopying a magazine page or something, on the glass, the qwality is stunning for £220.
