I am going to write a few words about favourite sailing sounds for small craft advisor

- and least favourite noises

One of mine is the sound of the curlew when in bed at night with the hatch open.

My least favourite is the sound of a small petrol generator.

Any more suggestions for me while I sit on the boat in a rain and windswept Whitby

Good morning Dylan

favourite sound: the sound of the wavelets and bubbles passing under the hull when sailing silently on a summer breeze

worst noise: persistent frapping of a halyard on the mast of a nearby boat in the early hours

Lying in my bunk, off watch, I like the rhythmic sploosh as the bow hits successive waves; I like the crackle and pop of kryl munching on the hull growth; I even like the splashing, clunking and voices as an anchorage comes to life in the morning. I hate the sound of the water pump running. And the shriek of high wind in the rigging.

Favourites-
The gurgle of water on a clinker hull.
The drumming of warm rain on the cabin top.

Least favourite-
Any slight hiccup in the note of the engine.
(When one of us changes the throttle, the other one always pops up and says 'did you do that!?')

Warm rain? Skye? I was going to say gentle summer rain but I live in Australia!

worst....that silence when you hit the starter on the donk

The song of a nicely running Seagull outboard.

A dislike is the sound of water gurgling past the galley sink outlet ...... esp when the insides are beginning to feel a bit gurgly themselves.

most irritating the sound of wavelets slapping under the quarter when forced to moor stern into the weather.

Dylan,

in the 1981 film Excalibur ( great photography but based on later romances ) King Arthur and Merlin chat on top of Camelot, and the call of Curlews is loud, I find their sound wonderful.

The sound - and smell - of sizzling bacon, cooked by someone else and no rush to get up, is also hard to beat !

Best: lots of those mentioned here.... especially the sound of wind blowing through the rigging when tucked up safely at anchor in a sheltered spot.

Worse: any noise during the night that I cannot explain: it sets off irrational worries...

Favourite? Perhaps a female eider around the harbour. With her gentle "nya' nya' nya'"

Worst, jet-skis, the noise of someone who thinks others should suffer for his pleasure.

Well this goes into the realms of Quantum Physics and time travel, but the reason rifles and Vulcan Phalanx gatling guns were invented was Admirals seeking a doze foreseeing the arrival of clueless jetski's !

The best sound is of steam trains and seagulls which means I am in Whitby on holiday. Worst sound is steam trains and seagulls and rain which means I am on holiday in Whitby on holiday and its raining.

A Triumph twin doing a bit of hard work with a small diameter high level exhaust system-Cue the Rickman brothers with their Triumph Mettise specials.

These days the worst is the alarm for an early start........................

rotrax,

my Dad once wrote a poem, ' The Thunder Of Triumph Tappets ', I always fancied a Rickman Z900, I remember seeing them at bike shops in Bembridge and Hayling but I never see them nowadays, even if I could afford one.

good sounds ...bad sounds

there is no sound like when an engine starts and you know that it is going to get you out of trouble

as for clinker boats

I understand they feel bigger than they are

and I like the sound when under way

but I have only ever slept two nights on them

I assume you get used to it but the noise went from the sound of a labrador licking its nuts to a full on seventeen beagles having a drink
