My Top 3:

- The first few seconds of peace after shutting off the engine and starting to sail at the beginning of the day.
- The first beer after mooring up at the end of the day
- Getting into the deluge of hot water in the shower at home, after a great day or weekend's sailing.

None of these can be beaten, IMHO. Agree or not?

I love the noise of the water under the stern after you switch the engine off and start sailing.

Love letting someone else helm and sitting up on the weather rail near the bow.

Love putting the autohelm on and standing at the bow looking back.

Love begin picked up by a swell, having felt it coming, then keeping a lovely straight course and watching the boat pick up speed.

The sleep of the dead I get after a long passage- wish I could replicate that in everday life.

I agree about the shower- HOT HOT water and bliss.

I just love sailing.

Nice thread.

As a newcomer to sailing, how about these.

1, Getting into the lock without hitting anything or making a t**t of myself.

2, The view back at my home town (Hartlepool) feeling proud of it and myself for learning to sail.

3, The shower and the beer bit! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Arriving at a destination for the first time (safely)!

Sleeping in a bed after being away for a few days.

As already mentioned, nothing like cutting the engine and feeling the boat continue to move in silence.

Arriving in a strange place you've never been to before after a long passage.

Having the first beer in a strange place you've never been to before after a long passage

Leaving a place that used to be strange but which you now know and setting off on a long passage towards another strange place.

THAT'S got to be it!

In my case it only lasts a fraction of a second - then the realisation that I will have to leave her at the end of the day/WE/month hits me and spoils the moment.

Only 4 years, 6 months and 19 days till retirement (October 29th 2009 - in case you were wondering) and I will never, ever have to leave her again.

1.Wind vane on, beam reach, sun shining and partner getting very attentive in the cockpit.
2. Glass of wine after 1.

Can't understand all this fondness for showers and getting into bed. All seems v.domesticated to me!

Anchoring off the white coral sands of the Glénan Islands on a hot summer day and cooling off with a swim.

Putting the awning up and with the cockpit mattresses, a cool drink and a good book.

Sitting in the cockpit on a balmy evening in the absolute quiet and watching the stars.

The sheer exhilaration of getting on the boat, no matter what type. Even a ferry will do.

Mooring in a marina. Not everyone's cup of tea, but all that clanking and frapping in rigging and slapping of water against hull, just tells me I'm having a break, and I sleep more soundly than anywhere else.

The second beer, after the first one

The X beer, after a good night out in company, a good meal, and the bar has closed. Back to boat and a chat or three, along with a beer. My boat is basic, with no heating or other extravagances, so these little things matter.

I'm not sure about that . .. .

1. Releasing the boat from the mooring - that instant freedom is achieved.

2. Swimming next to the anchored boat in +86*F crystal clear waters (I'm in the Caribbean) and raising my beer in this toast :

Definitely the time when she heels as the wind starts to move her, and the engine gives its last thump.
Also the night before on the mooring, listening to the waders and watching the stars.

Yes the "motor off moment" is a given in going sailing. But it happens just about everytime so I find the two other best moments are:----

Leaving the mooring under sail.

Picking up the mooring under sail.

Re: If you\'ve done any charter work you might recognize the first 2.

The moment you see the crew coming and none of them are drunk, wearing high heels, dragging a steamer trunk or children.

The moment you see the back of them.

The first glimpse of the boat as you arrive.

Looking, from land, out to the boat that brought you here.

Just edging ahead of the other boat.

Hitting a tidal gate and wringing every yard out of that stream.

Arriving

Slipping a mooring (or lifting the hook) under sail

First few seconds of silence after stopping the iron donkey

The "plop" noise when pulling the cork out of the first bottle of vino

The "phissh" noise when opening the first can of beer.

The chink of ice in the glass before the first sundowner of the evening.

The smell of fresh baked bread coming out of the oven.
