I have a friend who's just got himself a boat and I've been proffering various nuggets of advice, some of which have been on the subject ot tools, which got me musing; what is your favorite/most indispensible/most used tool on board?

Think my number 1 is a pair of mole grips, closely followed by a head torch. and When I was messing around with the transmission a Stilson wrench was also invaluable.

hope this isn't too 'loungy' for this forum!

I would not be without an adjustable spanner or two. The 6" one on board has a lanyard (bit o' sting ) on it with a loop that just slips over my wrist.

The only tool on board the sailing school boat though was a pair of bolt croppers

Can I take it that the ones on the left are Imperial, while on the right they are metric?

[/ QUOTE ] Some are metric some are imperial. The older ones are all imperial IIRC but they seem to be interchangeable without any bother.
More importantly some are left handed some are right handed. ( I keep a left handed one on the boat specially for the locknuts on the bottom half of the bottle screws /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif)

The tool I made to fit the slot in the fuel filler cap. If I lost that it would cause me some problems, especially if I didn't have the tools I used to make the tool to fit the slot in the fuel filler cap!

Anything cheap because as mentioned in PBO some while back it doesn't matter how much it cost, when it goes overboard it sinks !! : /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Vic, am I missing something, or are you having a laugh?

All of those spanners in your pic are the same, except some are turned over relative to the others.

If one is right-handed, then they all are... and visa versa.

I'm missing something yeah?

My favourite tool, is the right one for the job I'm doing.

But at a push, onboard, a pair of pliers, mole grips, screwdriver. thats about it, unless rigging cutters etc etc etc.

A bottle opener comes a close second to the corkscrew. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Of course I am. So was the person asking if they were metric or imperial. (although some have their lengths marked in cm and others in ins )
