Got an Eberspacher DL1 that's worked fine all winter- but yesterday it wouldn't fire up and the cabin started to fill with grey fumes - the unit is mounted in cabin locker and not cockpit locker.

Battery fully charged and engine running; pump clicking away merrily; don't think that the fumes were hot exhaust and they didn't go through the exhaust. Clear that the diesel wasn't being burnt Grateful for any ideas on what what might be wrong.

Could be dirty glow plug stopping the fuel from igniteing. Remove and clean. The best thing to clean out the system is to run on neat paraffin.

Had a vaguely similar problem that turned out to be a broken connection to the glow plug. If you have a link 10 or similar you can easily tell if the glowplug is taking current or not.

I would be very concerned if the cabin is being filled with these fumes, as the diesel should be going through the exhaust (either as unburnt diesel, or as hot exhaust) thus should be well clear of the cabin. If these fumes are coming out of the hot air part then there must be a major leak between the combustion side and the heated air side which means carbon monoxide getting into your cabin. That is not something to mess with - get a proper service agent to check it.
