that long distance cruisers when sailing on the same point of sail for a long time paint the front of the sail black as this helps to absorb lightand helps them move through the windless doldrums. Is he pulling my plonker?

It only works at certain times of the day, depending on where the sun is.

The concept is that the black side of the sail heats up from the sun, whereas the white side reflects the heat and is cooler. The hot sail causes the air on that side of the sail to thin and rise, so causing a depression that the sail moves into, pulling the boat with it whereas on the white side, the air is cooler and heavier and pushes the sail into the depression - Voila - Doldrums sailing !!!!

One down-side is that the paint needs to be faily thick and is a bugger to remove without damaing the sail. You therefore need two sails - one black on one side, one black on the other.

I suppose it depends on whose talking, if its Wullie he's hardly likely to call himself "Oor Wullie" , thats more what other members of his family or friends would adress him as, surely? On the other hand he himself might call himself "Wee Wullie" being of a modest nature?
