Fastnet lamp – how much space above to prevent scorching?

I have removed the Fastnet Gimballed lamp as part of my re-paint and noticed that the paint is scorched above the heat shield. I guess the shield was about an inch away from it.

I can easily move the lamp down a bit, but how far is far enough? Anyone else using the same lamp without problems from heat above it?

I have the same lamp , the heat shield is about 6" from the headlining which gets warm enough to feel a softening of headlining.

Personally having seen the quality of Fastnet lights and heard on here some where they are not the best.

I would look at the dutch style ones

Not certain how to get them in the UK but they appear to be much better quality...

I was meant to be back there this year with work and instructions from SWMBO to buy one. Now work takes me Indonisia .

Certainly they're not heirloom-quality items, but they're perfectly reasonable for day to day use. I have one on Kindred Spirit and would probably buy another (though the new boat needs a hanging lamp rather than a bulkhead one).

Can't remember exactly how much clearance I gave my heat shields but pickie shows what is definitely more than enough. I run the lamps all day during the winter on passage and so far over 10 years the headlining above the lamps is completely unmarked. As has been mentioned it is important that you don't headbutt them when you sit down so measure low enough not to warm the headlining but high enough to give bonce clearance. (And you must use indoor lamp oil.)

We had ours about 4" down from standard Westerly headlining on our previous boat. Used it daily for months at a time. No problems at all. Ran it on the cheapest paraffin we could find.

Agree it doesn't look super well made when you look very closely, but once installed and especially when lit it looks fabulous. It's a very simple design so nothing to go wrong really.

Gimbals in two planes so excellent on passage when it's a bit bouncy.

Note however that it's quite large and protrudes a good way off the bulkhead.

Thanks guys, I will have a play around with positioning. It sould like 4 inches will suffice and 6 is more than ample.
