I watched it with my missus. Being based in the Celtic sea with a small boat from that era, she’s definitely cooled off my plan to get us across to Ireland this year since last night

In 1979 our boat was in hospital being treated for a spotty bottom, so we had the season off. I remember having a family holiday at Bawdsey in a friend’s cottage and standing on the beach as the tail end of the gale went over us and wondering what it must have been like out there, though I don’t think the full horror of the event had got through to us then. 25 years later we motored round the Fastnet rock in a flat calm, which score few points in street cred.

Some great boats to watch. some heartbreaking accounts with a young son loosing his father.( I did not know of this.prior to watching it) Still looking forward to sailing round the Fastnet rock and it may, just may happen this year. Not all the stars have aligned yet, but getting close. Think I may have a crash dummy to accompany me!!.

Forecasts have got MUCH better since 1979. If have some flexibility in timing it can be a very smooth crossing.
