After three very enjoyable 3 days sailing, the lad and I arrive at the sales yard on Tueday afternoon. It's 3pm. We are directed to a berth in front of the office and over a cup of coffee we complete the questionnaire so the broker can get the ball rolling with internet, piccies etc. It's now 3.45pm

We return to the boat and commence the clean up as we have been a bit tardy on the cleaning front during the trip. At 4.15pm there is a knock on the cabin......would we mind awfully if this nice Swiss couple could have a look, sorry for the inconvenience etc etc.

The lad and I shuffle off to the swindlers and return 30 minutes later to find the broker asking if I will accept an offer for 5k less than the asking. When I realised he was serious I jokingly asked if they would split the difference. Ten minutes later he returned and shook my hand!!. Less than 2 hours in total.

Contracts and deposit the following morning, survey next Tuesday.

Needless to say I am happy but still a bit shell shocked.

Not good enough. We had our first offer within half an hour of the opening of Tollesbury Boat Show and four offers before lunch.

Similar, only I was the purchaser. I viewed Almada on the hard at Salcombe at about 12.30, made an unconditional offer at 13.30. After an hour into our drive home my mobile rang, wife answered, and I was told my offer was excepted. The only condition was, payment was made later that day by a BACS transfer. I phoned the broker and told him I was not able to send the full amount in one payment, so it was agreed that my first payment of £10000.00 would secure the boat with two more payments made on the following days.

Nationwide B Soc? Complete PITA.

Or is it just that seperate instalments of 10k keep it under the threshold of the tax man & the money laundering watchdog?

:D :D

Don't bother responding - it's just a tease & I know it's in poor taste and I don't give a damn for the real reason. :p

First contact with the owner of The Lazy Kipper in December 2010. Eight months and five meetings with him later we signed the papers :o

Bet he'd rather have had your buyers; mind you, I might have preferred your boat...

I reckon I beat you all. We berthed ours on the sales pontoon then walked up to reception and passed keys to broker. He handed keys to buyers who were sat in reception waiting. They viewed boat and bought within 15mins; shocked was the word.

Almost the same for me.

Pre internet days I advertised in Yachting Monthly. Phone call from a guy in Scotland wanting to drive down to Conway to view the next day.

He arrived at 10am, climbed into the cockpit whilst i made a coffee. He did not even go below before he said 'So, how much do you want?'.

We agreed the price, he gave me 10% deposit and a bottle of malt prior to the successful survey the following week.

Got to ask

To those who sold their boats so quickly - were you left with the feeling that you had not asked enough??

No, not me. To be fair to the broker he earned his fee. I proposed £130k but the broker said too cheap and we went at £137k, we sold for £137k. The brokers fee was £8k so selling effectively cost me £1k and the uber-quick sale enabled us to move on in our boating lives quickly. Smiles all round as far as I was concerned. The broker was Peters though; about 8 months before the problems there; I was lucky to miss that.

Free ad live on the web. E-Mail the next day followed by a few phone calls. Boat viewed a few days later. No negotiation & cheque in my bank that day. No broker fees. Happy new owner sailing it the next day.

OK - it was #2 son's Oppy.......

No. The broker and I had agreed the asking price over the phone. I was more than happy since it was more than I paid for the boat in the first place.

The real sweetener was that I had placed a deposit on my new boat two weeks beforehand and was resigned to the fact that I would be in the unenviable position of having two boats for several months.

So the speed of the sale was a welcome relief.

Great stories. Wonder how the market is today -- in the shadow of double dip recession and Osborne's omnishambles?

Its a bit fickle but I had a buyer for this one within 24hrs of listing and fully completed with survey etc within two weeks :)

Others are hanging around though, yachtworld were quoting an average of nine months recently.

1980... I was living 250 yards from the marina and walking my dog every day on the pontoons. There was this beautiful "Colin Archer" type 30 footer in need of a fair bit of TLC. Used to sit in front of her and day dreaming for hours of far away adventures... Swearing about the careless owner not doing his varnishing... One day, he was on board and I told him off for neglecting his yacht and instead of sending me back to my own business, he invited me to take a look inside. In front of a coffee he asked me if I liked her and the Love must have shown because before we parted he asked me if I wanted to buy her.
I said -how much?
He answered -FF80000
I replyed -I can't afford this sum
He said -how much can you give me?
I said -if I sell my Austin Healey, FF35000, if and when.
He said with a broad smile -Deal ... she is yours, pay me when you can.
This very day we made the ownership transfer and I had many years of pure hapiness on her, sailing all over the Med and living all these adventures I dreamt of before that famous day.

It happened that he could not even stand the sight of her as she was his recently deceased daughter's passion and being on board was too painful for him. He had noticed or had been told of a fox terrier's owner long interest in her and entrusted me to live his beloved daughter's dream for her. Which, believe you me I did...

So much for buying a yacht in a flash.....

Hope you got a good discout on the brokers cut, After all no marketing no pics no advertising, very little work at all actually.

My business motto has always been to leave a bit for the other guy and not be too greedy. She could have sat there for months with dozens of viewings and he would have earned every cent of his commission. Sure he had an easy sale, but we agreed the commission up front and he is just as entitled to an easy sale every now and then as I am.

The price was good, the new owners are ecstatic and I am moving to a new boat................everyone is happy and that is the best way to keep it.
