I would like to try to repair myself, thereby learn a little more. The gunny was not part of onventory when I bought the boat so getting it going would be a bonus. For now it's ballast though.

I have spoken with the Mitchum guys, before it found out what was really wrong. Very helpful,

Can't see your pics, says private. But a new Vetus twin cylinder bent a rod after the launch rolled a lot on moorings and got a bit of water up the exhaust pipe into the rear cylinder. Had a really good look and just replaced the rod. Worked fine.

Thanks to all on the advice re the hfl generator and how to bleed.

Bled it all through and still not starting so took off the rocker box and found the issue.

So what next? The bent rod I am sure is not the only issue. Trip to the mechanic or just take it out and sell it it?

Suspect I know what was causing the not right sound hohumm

Is this the exhaust or inlet ? With the pushrods to the left as you view the engine the exhaust is the furthest one. I would investigate if the exhaust valve has corroded in its guide. Easy enough to take the head off, but try to avoid seawater in the cooling system draining into the cylinder, and try to keep the cylinder barrel in position, otherwise re-sealing the lower seals can be awkward, and if the rings dislodge getting them back in the cylinder in a tight space can be tricky.

This is one of these jobs that some times can be fixed with a hammer.

Get the piston on the relevant valve to bottom dead centre. Give the valve a whack with a hammer, hitting the rocker is OK. A purist will use a copper faced mallet but it is not critical. If it moves GOOD. Squirt some light oil on the end of the valve. Can't hurt.

Hold the pushrod in a vice and using the hammer get it as straight as you can. Don't obsess if it is not perfect.

Reassemble and check valve clearances.

Rotate the engine through 720 degrees before hitting the starter.

If it runs and it is about 50/50 in my experience you should really pull the head and remove the valve to see how badly the head of the valve is corroded. Maybe 1 in 20 will fall off in the near future. All depends if you are a gambling man.

It's the rod on the rocker to the left from the alternator end.

That will be the inlet valve - the exhaust manifold should be to the right viewed from the alternator end. On both occasions I have had to remove the head the inlet has been clean as a whistle.

I agree that straightening the push rod may be OK, but I would want to know why the rod has bent.
