I am about to re-engine my Albin Vega. I was considering a Beta engine, but I have a serious reservation about the lack of hand-starting ability. I had to hand-start my old Volvo on several occasions on passage from Sweden to Scotland. I still intend to have two batteries, one a dedicated starting battery, but I hesitate to rely on electricity at sea, with no alternative.

Reading Bob Orrell's book, Amulet, reminded me about Farymann diesels. I phoned them, and they do have a 12 hp engine with hand start as well as electric. I remember Denny Desoutter, many years ago, describing them as 'over-engineered', and commenting very favourably on them.

Does anyone have any experience with Farymann engines? Would you recommend them?

Well, I can remember using Farymann diesels many years ago in industrial applications - but they were air cooled and NOISY! I believe Stuart Turner produced some marine diesels based on the Farymann - but presumably water cooled. You could give the Stuart Turner agents a call at Titchmarsh Marina - I forget the name of the engineers but I'm sure someone on here will remember!
Is the Farymann you are considering water or air cooled? If air it will be noisy and you'll have to have proper inlets and outlets for the cooling air. If water cooled make sure it has a heat exchanger and not raw water cooled.
You should reconsider a modern engine - I know they don't have starting handles but remember that cars lost them about 45 years ago! If you have two batteries, then the domestic one could always be used in an emergency if you use a '1- both - 2 - off' switch.
A poster on here has re-engined several Albin Vegas with Beta but I forget his name.

I would totally forget about starting by hand if I were you. You do have SAILS, so really the engine is not really required at all - sort of. I would definately have 2 batteries with the ability to start from the domestic one if required. As someone else has already pointed out, when was the last time you had a starting handle on a car. (Mine was a 1963 Austin A40, by the way)

As stated above, there was a thread about this a little while ago. I have a Farymann (1970s vintage), water-cooled and single cylinder. Easy to hand-start but not much power when it gets going. V. reliable, though.

Hi. I have a Comet 910 Plus Sail boat (1983) with its original Farymann 18HP. It's an excellent engine, and I never had any problems. All the spares are available at Nanni Diesel, now. There's also a hand-starting kit available, for those who don't want to rely on electricity at sea.

Stuart turner never used the farymann they were always an out and out Stuart hybrid 2 stroke petrol we do not have dealers but can offer new parts for the Stuart off the shelf

Starting Handles

Cars lost them in 1990 with the last production air cooled car. I still miss the old 2CV. You should have seen the looks once, outside a cinema queue, when I hand started my Charlston. Most of the brats in the queue thought I was winding up the elastic.
