Anchor off Culatra (with up to 50 other boats) and take the ferry across to Olhao or, when you come in the entrance take the left hand channel to Faro, anchor at 21 green and dinghy into the town small boat marina. There are some moorings (including mine) past the red buoy and sand spit but they're all private. There's a Trader 44 motor boat on one mooring and Mike sometimes rents out another he has so you could speak to him to see if it's free.

If you head for Faro, suggest you do it LW +/- 4 so you can see the banks which are covered at HW.

Thanks for that Graham, any other info appreciated we are in lagos at the moment

A couple of points. Approaching from the west, the sandbank off Isla Deserta (the long sandy island before the entrance) has extended south so watch your depth. There's also another new uncharted tuna net marked by cardinals off that beach, safe to pass inside it. Entrance to Ria Formosa not viable on ebb tides, can run at up to 8 kts on springs. Unfortunately we won't be around when you arrive, heading back to UK next week.

Don't bother to try what is erroneously called the marina at Olhão.
Collecting shellfish is prohibited for the time being due to toxins.
Anchoring is easy and the Ria is a great place , the above are minor irritations- enjoy yourselves.
