Hi All, Just got back from the dark side, dispite my years and the many people I know who sail, this was my first time out on a sail boat.
It was fantastic! very different to the mobo way of life. but equally as much fun.
big oyster boat, we set off in Sardinia and ended up in Corsica.
Boat very well crafted, with bags of accomodation. all mod cons and a lot more space than I thought there was going to be.
Out in rough weather, not a problem with the deep keel she was very stable and made a rough passage a great pleasure. I was genuinly shocked by how much I enjoyed myself.
Will I change my boat? No Will I change my attitude ? Yes.
Its not easy sailing those things and I have far greater admiration for them that do.
Vive la difference!!! but it all reinforces the old saying. "dont knock it till you've tried it"

Well i gotta say i had a bash at the 'Rags n Sticks' a little while back doing a 'Competent Crew' course. Had a great time.
I really do think all MOBO owners should atleast have a go at sailing and All Saily types should have a go in a MOBO. I recon it would better educate both sides and perhaps make a few of each get along a bit better.. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just returned from a Flotilla holiday round the Greek Islands had a great time and a real eye opener. So much easier to manoever but so much more difficult to sail. Wont convert us but great fun never the less. Will be posting pics on the other side in next few days.

Hi Dave, all work no play I'm afraid. That should all change over the next few months. I think the boats sold and have a new one targeted for end July, if that works then I'm going to spend a lot more time aboard going around the Med.
I fell in love with Sardinia and Corsica.

Mmm, I think we'd all have a great time in a big Oyster in the Med but would you have such a great time in a 26ft Westerly in the middle of the E Channel with a F6 blowing horizontal sleet into your face for 15hrs? It's a bit like a saily boater going for a ride on a 100ft Mangusta and declaring that motor boating is quite good fun after all /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I really enjoy sailing and have probably done far more sailing than mobo'ing, but you've hit the nail on the head there Mike!

Foot for foot, you tend to have far more accommodation on a motor cruiser than a sailing boat. You are also exposed to the weather much more than even on a sports boat.....

Although I would admit, sailing boats can handle heavy weather than most motor yachts, in particular, planing boats!

However, I didn't buy a motor yacht to battle the elements, but to cruise in comfort and be able to sit in a nice warm environment, where I also have a good view out of the "windows" so I can see what's going on around me!

I don't think you can compare sailing and mo'bo'ing as like for like, they are totally different animals and enjoyment can be had doing both!

We just need to give each other a little respect for what we prefer to do and accept it!

South Brittany ….an absolutely cracking sail on a 41` Sparkman & Stevens design Ketch….gunnels under and going like a train …we could see the squalls coming and worked the boat through them….. loving every minute……..what a great day.

Later.. as we made our 9th attempt to enter harbour with our small engine and a force 6 on the nose we decided to give up …found a bit of shelter and anchored for the night within sight and sound of the bright lights…….sort of took the edge off the day.

I do both and have spent far more nights on a yacht than on a mo-bo but I'm afraid sailing is begining to get tiresome, to me.

With little wind it is boring because it takes so long to get anywhere. Obviously the importance of this depends on whether you care most about being at sea or arriving at new places. If the latter then powerboating is far more satisfying.
On my many trips to sailing areas in the Med and Western part of the British Isles, I'd reckon that 70% of the time we were either ghosting along at less than 5kts or under engine. AWBs are not very good motorboats, especially into short sharp seas.

The relatively rare times when you are flying along under sail do go a long way towards redressing the balance. It's so invigorating being at the helm in strong wind conditions and there's nothing that compares to it in motor boating, unless it is skilfully motoring downwind in big seas. No, even that doesn't produce the same rush.
It is also true that you can go/be out in far worse conditions in a yacht than you would in a mo-bo of a similar length - it won't be comfortable but the motion will be far gentler and you'll feel safer.

The other difference that I've noticed more and more, as I've got older, is that travelling for hours, with the boat leaning over, is becoming exhausting. This is especially so as I seem to be "The Navigator" - god help us /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif - as I'm the only one of us that can stay below without feeling ill.

As others have said, they are two very different modes of boating and all followers of one should try the other in order to get a better understanding of the other's foibles.

Here endeth the Gospel of St John /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
