Isn't that west about?

Difficult to beat into headwinds with square rig, the way that was sometimes tackled, was to head south below the centre of the low pressure (rotating clockwise) & slingshot north when it passes through.

I read one account of a square rigger trying to weather ther Horn but after a good period of time the captain gave up and sailed EAST ABOUT as you rightly pointed out.
