Hi,
Can anyone offer advice on the use of and availability of adjustable V belting which I understand is more economical in the long term, although initialy more expensive.
I have a Perkins 4108.
Many thanks
Mike

It's always better to get the correct size non-adjustable vee belting for long life. Adjustable vee-belting does stretch and will need shortening during its life - and it's more expensive. But very useful if you cannot put a standard vee belt without major dismantling. If you have problems with poor transmission, try Cogged Raw Edge Wedge belts which can transmit more poer for their size.
Go to you local Bearing Services Distributor or Fenner or other local Industrial Drives/Bearing Distributor - look in your local yellow pages, they are all over the country in major towns

G'day Angelsson,

Many moons ago I used to look after a fleet of earth moving equipment, we had a large compactor / roller that had a doitz engine and a 200 amp oil cooled alternator that required twin belts to drive it. Problem was the main hydraulic pump had to be removed to replace a belt on the alternator.

After many many belts of all brands known to man, some very expensive matched sets included, and most only lasted a week; we installed a set of Gates Green Stripe belts. 4 years later the same belts were still in service and in good condition.

I have no connection at all with the company, but the belts on all my equipment today are from Gates.

Easier replacing a link on a link belt than replacing a whole new section !!

The adjustable belts are OK for short periods, so they are OK in an emergency. In normal use they are noisy, all those studs whizzing through the air. The material is quite hard and if you are driving alloy pulleys they will be worn out very qiickly. I agree with Oldsaltoz, Gates belts are best and should be fitted in critical applications.

Are Gates green stripe belts readily available at local suppliers as suggested, if not do you know where from.
Many thanks to all who made the effort to reply with assistance.
Thanks,
Mike
