Please indulge me for a moment to share something special. Get hold of this month’s Yachting monthly, turn to page 76, examine closely the picture of a Elan 31. See that salty sea dog type in the cockpit, the one with receding hairline and shorts – that’s me!!! Of the thousands of people at the boatshow, fate has chosen me for immortality!

Picture if you will my family eagerly gathering round to peer at the latest YM (as is our custom) the page turns and there I am. Tears of pride and joy well up in my wife’s eyes. My children gaze in awe and wonder and then rush out to tell their friends. My mother-in-law puts an arm round my shoulder – “well done son” says she, her voice trembling with emotion. My dog puts her head on one side in a moving likeness of Nipper the HMV dog (not easy for an overweight Golden Retriever). For my part, I can only say that I feel that, appearing in the one and only Yachting Monthly has somehow made my life complete.

Kim – if you feel moved to send me a copy (signed if possible) of this historic image to take pride of place on the mantelpiece, I, and my family, will be forever in your debt.

If Elan yachts want to donate that very boat – that would be nice too.

Thank you for your time.

And I was down below in that boat at the time that picture was taken having it off with the sales girl and I did not like the way you were staring at us.

Not seen piccy, but concerned about concept of receding shorts.

Should I hide magazine from wife and daughter

I can beat that! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I took a photo at the boat show (from MBM's boat, Calm Voyager) of the Endevour, on my 60 quid camera.. Apparently it'll be appearing in the next issue of MBM :)

At least you are not threatening to sue us.

Many moons ago I got an official looking letter from someone, the first sentence of which suggested that he was going to sue us for picturing him naked on the front cover of a Motor Boats Monthly river boating supplement. That, as you might imagine, sent me scurrying to the back issues shelf fairly rapidly.

To cut a long story short the man in question was (allegedly) sat on the toilet of his boat, completely starkers. Toilet was in traditional location, right up in the heads and forehatch was wide open. In the picture you could just about see half an (admittedly unclad) arm half out of the hatch (perhaps he was trying to get extra leverage?). We took the picture as the boat was entering a lock that just happened to have around 100 members of the general public eating the traditional lock fare of ice creams on a nice family Sunday outing; suspect they were all touting Kodak Instamatics so if nothing else the Boots technicians might have been busy that week.

His real motive for writing...wanted a free image of the front cover and I guess he thought if he was nice we might feel forced to, ummm, ignore him or something.

No you have been nice about getting caught on camera so indeed we ought to be nice in return. But a YM signed by me?

I didn't say signed by you Kim. I just thought you might know someone famous!

By the way, are you suggesting that walking round the Boat Show stark naked is a good ruse for getting a YM picture? How about skinny dipping in the Earls Court pool? How about I wear nothing but a hat bearing the legend - "Sponsored by Yachting Monthly"? Now there's a thought........
