Hi,
First time poster so please be gentle!

I'm looking to purchase the falcon 22 or Cruisers international 224 this would be my first boat so basically looking for any info on common faults and any build issues both with the boat and engine.

We are a family of four and looking to use the boat mainly at weekends on the river and some local inland coastal areas.

Many thanks

Lee

Hi lee

Might be better off asking this question on the mobo forum, as the majority of posters here are yachties.

In the meantime, I am sending you a PM. Click on notifications at the top of the page.

Hi
Always liked both of these boats and were close contenders in the shortlist before I bought my sealine 218 10 years ago.
I have been on a falcon and my friend had a 224 which I was very familiar with. I really liked the falcon but proffered the 224 for the sense of space it gave down below and the way it went through the water at slow speed.
Only downside to the 224 was in terms of marina fees....although the name would suggest it was 22.4 feet...it is actually measured at just over 25 feet.
The other thing to avoid with these boats is certain engines.
The 224 occasionally came with a Volvo ad31 or tamd31 diesel. It isn't up to the task at all and the power to weight ratio was appalling. Good for pottering about, but was almost flat out to keep it planing and any form of conversation was completely a non starter at anything more than a gentle displacement cruise speed. Especially with the hood up.
Some of these boats also came with the petrol VP 4 cylinder engine. Avoid at all cost. So problematic and clearly not meant for the marine environment. Timing belts etc are common failures.
Make sure that whichever you choose has the VP 4.3 205a and VP 290DP drive. Good news is these were the most preferred spec. Anything else should be avoided in my opinion.

Re: Falcon22 or Cruisers international 224

Many thanks for all your kind responses.

I'm going to spend most of the time on the river so what will the handling be like at lower speeds and is there any major faults with Volvo penta engines.

Many thanks
Lee

Re: Falcon22 or Cruisers international 224

Most Falcons spend a lot of time on rivers. A single engine on an outdrive takes a little bit of practice to helm. Check the service history thoroughly, particularly the outdrive. Inspect both before committing to a purchase.
