Fake Teak!

Has anyone seen or done their deck with Tek-Dek, or any other fake teak?

Been looking on the net, I've got www.tek-dek.co.uk website, but for some reason it doesn't load for me!

Is there any other Fake Teak available, we are looking to do the Cockpit and bathing platforms of our S24.

What are the pro's and con's of using 'Fake' teak as agains't Natural Teak?
I thought about the fake stuff, cause i believe its lighter(weight), its maintenance free, easier to lay(apparrantly) and costs less!

Does anyone have any reccomendations?

And are there any suppliers north of the border?

Wiggo DIYed his tekdek and the pix looked vair okay. But then he's all techy plus computerish hence familiar with stuff taking ages and not bosh there that's that fitted, whereas I'm not at all sure you have an opposing thumb. Or do you?

Fake teak doesn't go black and ridgy, but real teak somehow feels a bit posher tho matter of opinion really, esp on small areas not a big deal - i think a big area of fake teak mite start to look a bit lino-ish. It would possibly be imprcatical to fit real teak round v complicated areas as the too-small bits will snap or look rubbish.

Other than that, the boat goes a bit slower with the extra weight whether real or pretend teak. The tree-huggers won't like you using real teak so I always specify that the wood must be from a tree that was already chopped down.
 
Well the S24 is a small cockpit, and currently has the typical Sealine Blue carpet on it, and with a small white dog, its a bloody nightmare to keep clean, We als o need to think we might have a nipper crawling around next year, and i would recon the tek-dek would be easier to keep clean than the carpet!

Regarding wether i could do it or not, I would certainly give it a go, I am pretty practical, i am a carpet fitter and upholsterer to trade, and work in the furniture trade doing alsort of work and repairs, so i'd like to think i could make a reasonable job, if i tried it!!

If Wiggo has any pics, i'd love to see them.

So presumably you started off with opposing thumbs but probably lost them along the way thanks to good old stanley and his knife /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
Yes, quite!! Maybe a better idea if i didn't tackle something like this, as i have ended up in hospital on several occasion due to stanley knife accidents at work!!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Opposing thumb

um, well, it's not really a saying, alistairr, so it's not like "all fingers and thumbs" or "two left feet". An opposing thumb (actually an "opposable" thumb) is a good thing and very important - possesed by all humans, and is the reason why humans can pick things up and use tools. I'm afraid i was being horrid again and suggesting that you didn't have this ability. Sorry.

Thats alright! You don't know me from Adam, apart from buying some super Leopard print carpet from me, and asking me to come down and fit for you!! Remember, so you must have had some faith in me to say that!! Or was that all in jest too??

The only thing we have with real teak is that its getting very hot on yr feet and of your kids hands in summertime keep that in mind too, but then again you would have that with fake teak too

this is very true BUT highly irrelevant to alistairr who lives in scotland hence more concerned about putting down salt on the teak to stopp himself skidding on the sheet ice, heehee.

I think he just back from his jollies and probably first day back in the office feeling that nothing gets done when he's not about and all the problems are his to sort.

I was going to use it, but then changed how I was going to do the particular job.

I contacted TEK-DEK and they sent me a sample. I have to say I was very impressed by the look and feel of it. I don't think it would look like lino, the only possibility is that it would all be 'too' clean.

Maybe you should fit it and then give the dog and kids free run on it to get it stained a bit in places!
