Fake teak failing badly, how to sort?

The engine cover and a small step (18" X 12") have a poor imitation teak style finish to them

I'm not particularly botherd about it looking like teak, but would like a consistent finish. The attached file shows the engine cover. There's no room for a thick flexiteak style stick on finish. It's almost like it's printed on, but as you can see it's flaking off.

Any suggestions? Half tempted to sand it back and floor paint it.

Read up about Flotex. Apart from colour fade in lots of UV it is virtually indestructible. Have had it on my cabin sole for 25yrs.
