Hi guys, just thought I'd share this with you.

After weeks of planning, fabricating and geometry (including a few failures) my project is finally finished.

THe weight of the door was MUCH heavier than first thought, so air rams and safety systems needed to be uprated. All controls an releases are mounted in a way that small hands can't mess ( behind bathing platform safety gate)

Really happy with how it turned out :)

As a targa 40 owner I am disgusted that this sort of porn can be posted on a public forum!

Wow that is awesome. I replaced my rams last year and can testify the garage is very very heavy.

Do tell how it is done

Thanks Jeremy,

One of the existing rams was changed from a 1350Nm to a 2500Nm and the other side has a custom made stainless steel twin air cylinder. All controlled with a very small efficient air compressor.

The controls are located behind the gate for safety reasons.

The best thing is, none of the existing ram brackets have to be changed.

Wow, lovely job ED. There are several T40 owners on here and I think you might be asked to publish drawings and a parts list. Imitation=flattery and all that. Can you show some close ups and the control station please?

Are they air rams as opposed to hydraulic? So u have installed a small compressor?

Lovely job

And I completely agree that there doesn't have to be a reason (other than fun :D)

Nice job. Stupid question but why was a double ram required on one side but not the other?

Nice job. Stupid question but why was a double ram required on one side but not the other?

We tried one ram each side, but the back door is so heavy that the rams alone could not dead lift it. The single oil filled ram has a strength of 2500 Nm which is enough to hold the door open on its own, this assists the air rams with the initial dead lift.

Its only an estimate but I think that back door weighs about 250KG - if the air rams were stong enough to deadlift the door, it would be very bouncy on the way down and potentially lethal if any of the parts failed.

The addition of the oil ram makes the system very safe. There was also a space issue, there was not alot of room on the side where the single oil ram is fitted, getting the air ram in that position required some further fabrication, which made the wole thing weaker to.

We fitted the twin air rams with a small bearing allowing it to swing, this made the dead lift much easier.

For any Targa owners that want a look, the boat is in Lyminton, you are more than welcome to have a play. I am not down there at the moment, but next time I am, I will take more photos of the install and a few more detailed ones of the ram setup.

Wow, that's very nice. What have you done with the original latch mechanism on the handle to the garage - do you just leave it in the 'open' position? Do you have any control over the speed of opening, ie could you make a bit slower just with compressor adjustments? If you're not using the oe latch, what keeps the door shut? (If mine isn't latched closed, it will bounce open on its own in a sea).

Nice job though, very well done. Interested to learn more.

Thanks for the feedback guys,

The speed is completely controllable - I suppose slower would look a little cooler.

The original latch mechanism is still in place, but I suppose it could be removed ( although I've never had an issue with it bouncing up )
