Hi

I have decided to look for a Fairline Targa 38 without much or any success but I notice a lot of boats have changed from Volvo D6-310 to D4-300 with the D6 boats sitting around for a bit whilst the D4's seem to sell more quickly.

I know the D4's were fitted to newer boats 2009/10 onwards so the newer boats are the ones selling.

Was there a problem or issue with the D6, was it too heavy or was there not much difference and also is there much difference with smoothness and noise. My experience of cars would tell me the 6 cylinder would be better but is that the same with boats.

Look forward to some comments or advise.

Thank you

Richard

D4 and D6 are the same engine just two more pots on the D6.

D6 came out in about 2003 with 310 hp D4 was about 260hp . The 38 would originally have been Kad 44 or Kad 300.

Bear in mind the age and hours of the engines, check coolers very carefully.

D6 is now rated up to 400hp.

The D6 sounds better, produces more torque from the extra capacity rather than using a supercharger.
D4 will have more space in front of it to perform maintenance, is lighter, has balancer shafts, so still smooth, but still sounds like a 4 cylinder diesel.

From a power to weight perspective, I guess the D6 makes more sense in the higher hp versions (350/370), although the D6-400 version is probably pushing the upper limits of what a DPH drive can actually cope with.

I'd be quite happy with either in a T38 - I always wanted six cylinder engines in my boat, but it didn't happen!

D6 came out in late 2004 the 310hp, and D4 in 2006. Yes they have a similar design but saying they are the same is wrong.
One is 5.5 liter and the D4 is 3.6l.
I never saw any of the 38 Targa with Kad44 or 300. You have to remember that the 38 Targa was launched in 2006.
If I could I would go with D4 300hp as these give less problems to the stern drives over time, and avoid the 260 of which I think is just powered exact for the 38 Targa.
