I am looking at a few Phantom 42s in the UK and the Med. The boats I am looking at are 97/98 and between £100K and £140K. Looks like there are some good deals in the Med. Other than the usual things to look out for when buying a used boat and the pros/cons of Med boats I was hoping for a bit of feed back from anyone that owns or has owned one of these boats. Are there any specific items I should look out for? Suggestions on other make/model that would fit into the price range would be of interest as well. The boat would end up back in the UK.

I did find a thread on this from a few years ago but I was wondering if anything much has changed over time.

Thank you for any opinions.

Isn't Shawn (lanerboy) of this parish trying to sell a P42? His looked extremely smart from the photos I saw and I'm sure he'd do you a deal.

Shawn had a Phantom 40, like you say looked absolutely immaculate. Not sure if its sold now though, as I've seen on Sealine forum he's becoming / become owner of a very nice SC42.

Is he really. You can go right off people (especially traitors like that)! Seriously...

1) SC42 is a great design (have fixed all the S41 issues). A proper Tardis inside.
2) I think Shawn's boat was still for sale last week (unless he's p'exd). The OP should take a look at it (P42 is probably just a P40 with some bathing platform extension)!

I think the OP is talking about the old-model Phantom 42 (jfm had one, and I think henryf might have as well). The later Phantom 40 that Shawn has/had was based on the P38, iirc.

To the OP - these were highly-regarded boats in their time, but the inescapable fact is that they are approaching 20 years old - so condition and provenance is everything.

Yup as Jimmy says op is asking about the earlier generation boat that was made from mid 1990s till about 2000

It was a 40 then they extended the swim platform and it became 42. From 1999 onwards there was a new saloon window shape. Engines were tamd 63 p 370 hop as said above

I had one as Jimmy said. A 1999. Great boat in its day. I liked it very much and can't think of anything bad about it. The stbd shower room is tiny but by the standards of the day was ok. It was well built and those engines are good, and well understood/easily serviced. The improved saloon windows were nice so try to get a 1999 boat. Your budget easily covers that I think

Thank you for your thoughts. Someone else has suggested for my budget I could go to the Med and get a newer Azimut 46 and have it shipped back. There is some bias to the suggestion however they look to be a nice boat if a bit rare in the UK.

There is an Azi 46 for sale on the Hamble. Give Adam Baker at Global Yacht Services a call.

Thank you I have had a quick look at that one on line. If you compare it to some of the European boats it looks a bit expensive. Very nice condition though.

I think forumites rogerrat and johng39 both have Azimut 46's, if you want to get an owners opinion.

63P engines will be a well known quantity by now. We had some oil lines give up the ghost one put a bit of oil in the engine bay.

Check the wardrobe in the second cabin for water leaks. Screen seal from memory.

Happy memories, our boat made it over to Scandinavia on its own keel when we sold it prior to buying the Princess P42

Henry :)
