Hi Martin
I have similar engine/drives to your old ones and am seriously considering dieselisation. Do you have any advice or recommendations based on your experiences? Also what diesel engines did you go for?
Thanks
Phill.
I think the first issue to resolve is what do you want to do by way of cruising. .. gentle river cruiser or something with some wellie.
My 2 very thirsty twin carb volvo petrol 145s were replaced with Lancing Marine turbo Ford 145HP diesels. These are extremely economical engines being based on Ford Transit 2.4 litre engines. The engine change was done by Tim Barfield at Hampton.
Although I am non tidal Thames based I wanted to be able to do anything the boat was originally built to do. A gentler floating caravan could have been achieved with 2 Ford 1.8 diesels, but that would limit performance to displacement speed only.
These 145 diesels give the boat a serious turn of speed. I know of no other unit of this power which will fit in the boat. They are a tight fit ... but they do go in. The Mirage has its outdrives quite close together (for speed) which tends to limit space available. I can however still stand in front of the engines to change impeller. Happily the Fords are much cheaper than other engines.
The Lancing dieselisation kit comes complete with remote oil filters so servicing is easy.
If you go ahead with dieselisation I would recommend all new fuel lines plus a good tank clean (unless you are certain about the contents of your fuel tank) and some decent pre-filters. I also had Tim Barfield take a serious look at the 280 legs to make sure they were fit for the new engines.
If you get serious about this and Lancing Marine are in the frame then get back to me by PM so I can give more detailed suggestions and recommendations.
I do have 2 sets of propellers
for river 15x17
for tidal 16x21
as the slower revving engine needs something with more bite to get up on the plane. If needed I change over in about 15minutes per prop standing in shallow water in the marina.
The big props are a bit brutal for manoeuvering in locks , marina etc on the non tidal Thames, and I can only run one one engine otherwise I would be speeding.
