Can anyone help me?

After a lot of great advice from this forum we purchased a boat and have had a great first season. But just a small issue which I don't seem to be able to sort out.

The port engine runs great, starts first time and never lets us down. The Starboard fires up ok but after a brief time at around 2000 rpm's just dies. I start it again and is ok for a while as long as I don't switch it off. We usually go an hour or so down river. On the return journey it just will not start at all and only get back on the port engine.

Fuel seems ok and I have replaced plugs, points, leads, cap & rotor arm.

If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance.

Had a pair of similar volvos in my old Princess. Port engine was always fine, but starboard engine would run ok up to about 2500rpm, but if I ran it over 3000rpm it would die after about 5 mins running.

Like you I replaced loads of stuff to try and make it run right. Every time it died the coil would be red hot. After 20 mins it would cool down and run fine. New coil sorted the problem, but always seemed to be much hotter to touch that the port engine even though the water temps were the same. Electrical mystery..........

Could be the condensor, they can fail when they get hot. They should be changed when the points are replaced. However I would check fuel mixture. If you're sure the petrol pump is working ok, it may be running a little weak.

Sounds like a possible leak on vacuum side of pump allowing air to be drawn in if any filters etc have been removed recheck seating etc

But I would also check carb and fuel filters incl pump filter for dirt and float levels are correct and the needle valve which lets fuel into float bowl operates ok

Let us know how you get on

dunno the engines at all, but from my car days, a behaviour like that could well be due to failing mechanical fuel pump.

Anyway, would be good to establish there's fuel coming in the cylinders so you can discard this option and go for el. problem as the previous poster notes.

Second the coil,
It could be the lift pump or tank breather blocked if you have two tanks, when the engine stops disconect the carb feed and turn the engine over with the pipe in a bucket, to see if you have fuel.

I would look at fitting electonic ignition and a modern style coil. see http://www.lumenition.com/ not a cheap fix but it would first on my list.

I,m with the coil gang I had same symptons and a supermac changed both coils for 6V "ballasted"coils and it really improved cold starts,i also had the same problem with a tiny leak on the fuel line where it goes into the carb wjith a tiny hole where the pipe joined the fitting(same boat/engines as you

Thankyou everyone for your thoughts. Could someone recommend a suitable coil replacement. I have a condensor to fit too. I'll let you know on the outcome.
