Hi

I am going through the hoses in the cooling system on my Volvo 63Ps and I spotted something that looks suspicious. The picture shows the cooloant connections that goes to the calorifier. There are no leaks and this is the original installation by Fairline. I have had a series of breakes of some of the raw water hoses and an oil line resently and I am wondering if these are next in the row to burst. These type of plastic domestic type water system piping does not seem to be up to the norm for usage on the coolant side of the engine in my view. Has anybody had any breaks of these? Should they be replaced asap?

thank you for your views in advance

On my 63ps the calorifier hoses at the engine are normal engine coolant hose that run out to the hull where they then change into plastic domestic style pipes. The plastic pipes are OK for the heat of the cooling water but on your installation I'm not sure how well they will take the vibration. I think I would be inclined to modify your design as plastic tends to go brittle over time.

On all my Fairlines there has been a foot of hose before switching to Hep20 domestic fittings. Yours should be ok, as the engine jacket is say 90deg and these fittings are obviously ok with that. It wouldn't do any harm to fit hose if you wish, but as it is working fine I don't see the point. There is certainly no logic connection that says your failures on raw water hoses and an oil line are indicators that these will fail

In summary, I'd leave as is

I see you have the earlier 63p( i can tell by the coolant tank cap) later is black plastic and a different header tank.

The hose that supplies oil to the main injection pump fails, pumping all the oil into the bilge, someengines have been wrecked and totally seized, its the swage on the line that was incorrectly crimped by the factory, so id check that if your worried about your engines age and any related problems, its one main factor I always check on a service.

Ref the coolant hoses to the HW tank, the hep20 is fine, but id check the rubber for cracks.

Another 2 to check are both black rubber sea water hoses from the sea water pump to the intercooler, and the other from the intercooler to the heat exchanger, ive replaced a few of the first one in line as it rubs on the wiring loom p clip and bursts at that point.

We wont go on about any more of the 63ps glitches!

Indeed the hoses that broke were the exact same ones you mention so they are all changed by now, thanks to the bilge alarm we did not risk sinking but we took on a lot of water before we found out what was going on. Also the oil line going to the distribution pump failed and I was lucky that it occurred when accelerating from idle and I managed to stop the engine within 3 seconds. The water hoses broke at 600hours and the oil line at 700. My boat is actually a Phantom 38 from 1998, the picture in my original post is showing an identical engine sitting in a Targa 43 however I have this type of coolant cap as well.

The TAMD 63P engine itself seems extremely reliable and it is a pity that such a great engine could be prematurely wrecked by a failing oil line. I also found several posts on Boatiesel.com about the oil line issue. Was there actually a re-call from VP regarding this?

The info on the HEP20 piping from their website is reassuring as they include special applications like boat use, vibration and coolant proof. In addition for normal domestic use, they give 50 years warranty! This installation could actually be as good as any other using traditional hoses and clamps. I think I will leave it as is for now.

Thank you all for your very helpful answers, highly appreciated!
