A friend of mine is looking at one of these in the Med with two of Volvo Penta AD31P Duoprop Diesel do these engines give adequate acceleration.

Any other comments or defects of these boats ?

Early 29’s had ad31's and moved to ad32's about 97/98. The Targa 29 with the ad31's will need to be trimmed fairly accurately to get on the plane (not the quickest in its class) and dependant on conditions. Once up on the plane then it goes great, drop below 3200rpm (about 22knts) and you loose the turbo effect and it drops off (the ad32's have superchargers and produce power lower in the rev range). If you can afford it go for the Targa with the ad32's. I have a Targa 29 with ad31p and love it. The boat is great fun and is a strong/quality boat but do all the usual checks and a survey is a must; consider a separate survey for the engines. Make sure it has all the paperwork (service history) and good luck.

AD31 boats also worth a surprising amount less than KAD 32 boat (as are turquoise hull ones compared with blue or white hulls) so if going for the smaller engines (or the turquiouse hull) make sure the price reflects this, cos the guy buying from you in the future sure will!

Boat is very noisey and vibrates terribly at low speeds due to the 4cylinder diesel installation.Porpoises at max speed.Targa 30 shares the same hull but extended by 15 or so inches.
Get a boat with 6 cylinder engines like the Targa 33 vastly superior in seakeeping, noise levels etc.
Try before you buy

does this follow for all ad31 installations or just on the targa 29?
I have these in mine and it is a bit noisy at low speeds (doesn't porpoise at high though), I just put this down to being diesel (had four stroke outboard before).

This is news to me. I've been on a T29 and did not experience these problems.

I've got the KAD32 diesel in a Sealine, and it's true that it isn't the smoothest diesel on the planet, but it's fine for a four cylinder diesel, and I wouldn't say it was particularly noisy either. To my ear, it's a very pleasant burble /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have driven quite alot of Falcon 275s and not had the problem of porpoising. The noise and vibration from these twin 4 cylinder installations is OK when you are planing.
The 275 with a single 6 cylinder diesel is an excellent set up.smooth quiet and 28 knots.
I have a single Volvo AD31 diesel soundproofed still get some noise but no resonation.
I suggest petem goes out in a Targa with 6 cylinder diesel engines you wont beleive the difference

Balls! With respect. We had a T29 with AD31's and the noise levels were OK, and no vibration to speak of. We could just get ours to porpoise, but only by deliberately trimming out too far. T29's were available with either AD31's or KAD32's. Go for KAD32's if poss, as the resale will be higher and the acceleration better. The AD31's can struggle to get the boat up if fully loaded and too many peeps aft, but are fine once she's over the hump.

T33 is much bigger, but older (in looks as well as years). Performance with AD41's is the same as the T29 with AD31's, FWIW. We raced Hagrid often enough...

I have driven the Falcon 275 with most of the engine options and non of them porpoised. It is a 40knot boat with the twin yamaha 4 cylinder diesels. The best installation was the single kad 43 volvo diesel Smooth quiet no vibration and 30 knots.
I have a single volvo ad31 diesel which is noisey at low speeds but does not resonate like the twin set up.
Petem should try a Targa with the 6 cylinder Volvo kad 43 or 44 huge difference. Were the engines running whilst you were on the Targa 29

Yes, at a wide variety of speeds including 10knots through Portsmouth harbour and flat out in the Solent. If you think they're noisy that's fine, it's just not an observation that I've heard before.
