Hi I am in the processing of aquiring an old fairline family 20. ...

I would like to ask for help for various start up/clean up items:

1. Polish/clean up outer, making scuffs good, what materials/techniques to get it done using elbow grease (not a powered mooring)

2. Replacement of perspex windows/screens where necessary... can this be done by oneself if you wish?

3. General detailing advice.. aluminium frames etc. all appreciated.

4. Cleaning/making tonneau better appearance. in tact but old at present.

Any other advice appreciated.
thanks

See my note on your other thread.

Plastic windows (in the canopy) can be replaced. I do not know anyone who has done this themselves, but there are many specialists out there. Budget £50 per window.

Use Brasso on the alu frames.

Any deep scratches in the hull can be polished back with wet and dry. If the scratches/scuffs have gone through the gelcoat, then you can get gelcoat filler from a Chandler or E-bay. Not so easy to match colours though, but I believe the Sprint is white.

hi, thanks for info.
its a fairline family 20. like you said bit old but i dont think it looks that dated really. decent enough to make a bit of an ongoing improvement project....
with regard to the windows i was referring to the prespex ones in the cockpit which have got some crazing on them. and the options for these if i wish to replace. thanks

Previous owner of our sprint had new windows fitted to the canopy, cant remember what he said it cost but it wasnt to dear.
Give it a good pressure wash then waterproof with Fabsil, stopped all the water leaks in our canvas, also a lot of the soft top land rover boys recommend it as well.
Cif and a scrubbing brush is real good for stains on the grp etc.

the renovo looks good, with the colour restorer as well as cleaner and sealer... about £40 all in on ebay. i have ordered some of that G3 stuff for body work and have some auto glym super resin polish already for car.
what would you suggest.. just lots and lots of elbow grease as only water at the mooring I am getting. thanks

Don't know about crazing but scratches etc in perspex can be removed with brasso, it's worths try . Always liked the Fairline weekender looks.

You can probably get the Perspex windows copied at a local plastics supplier. The originals were probably supplied by Trend Marine. You'll find them with a Google. They might be able to point you in the right direction.

Dependiing on how grubby the hull is, you could always rub it down with very fine wet or dry paper, using a cork or similar backing pad.

thanks.
what else will I need... current bsc is til june 13. How much does that cost to replace.
The mooring is the crucial bit and a currently asking to continue mooring at same spot despite canal trust say non transferable initially.
It is insured and should be changed to my details, do I need to know the boat survey report renewal? as current insurer holds that document from exisiting owner.. what frequency do these need renewing?
thanks all.

BSC costs about £150 for the inspection and cert and is a 4 year cycle. You need to be very careful who you select to do the inspection, as there is a variance on the rigour and outcome. Best to talk to folk local to you to find out who they "recommend". I had a particular problem with mine as I was green to the system when I bought Rafiki, and it took me several months to resolve, finally getting Cummins to make and fit some special fuel filter covers due to the WiF (water in filter) sensor block. I had good support from the BSS people as well, but it was a real pain, and I aim to avoid it in April next year for the re-cert.

If you google the Boat Safety Scheme, you will find the technical details, so you can do a pre-check yourself.

The more folk you talk to locally, the more support you will get. Generally us Boaty people are quite helpful;)

would this re-test be a bit iffy for an older boat? or is it a case of more low-tech maybe the better? and is this the same test cert that i would need if requested by insurer..? or is that another test entirely?
cheers
John

The BSC inspection should be the same whatever the age and condition of the boat. They are most interested in the fuel system, gas system, electrics etc for fires, and the black water for polution.

I think the insurers might be asking for a survey, which is a different thing, this is to help them manage the risk. Is the boat going to sink or harm life, or anything else a claim might induce.

The BSC is compulsary on most of the inland waterways, and you won't get a river/canal license without the BSC, or insurance.
