Fairing Compound

Whats the best thing to use a fairing compound on the hull of a wooden boat. Either traditional or modern as long as it works and is relatively simple to apply.

There are various fillers available to choose from. For the racers, there are micro-balloons which weigh nothing, for abrasion-prone places there is powdered glass, and a range of fluffy plastic concoctions in between.

Alternative to epoxy

The epoxy fillers are very good but they are a "fiddle" to use and they are often a bit coarse grained.

I think it is best to use epoxy based filler on large dents and scratches, and to fill small imperfections between coats with a more old fashioned filler - Hempels make a "finefill" in a tube which is like the old trowel cement
