Hi, did Motor Boat and Yachting have an article on Peter De Saverys Fairey Super Swordsman 33 "Charleston"?
She was originally sold from the London Boat Show in the 70's, named "Chaperone to Frigate".
Then purchased by Mr De Savery and taken to New York for the 83 Americas Cup Challenge, not perfectly clear what happened next but she spent some time in Cornwall, Florida and Aldernay .
I would be very interested in any MBY editions that featured any info on this boat.

Many thanks, i was trying to locate a couple of Magazine back issues, i spoke to a knowledgeable MBY chap at the boat show on friday
Also spoke to several equipment dealers but am struggling to find comprehensive detail on an electrical fit out with specs, regulations etc etc
I will eventually be starting from scratch (the "blank canavas") and want to take advantage of and incorporate all the features a modern boat would have.
Any pointers gratefully received.

I'm with you on that Peter.
My new toy is stripped back to the basics everything electric is going to be new.
In my situation it is a Fairey Spearfish.

Yep, mcb's and latest wiring specs, some tasty sound deadening, but very difficult to find a generic plan to start from to make a perfect boat .
At the moment our plan is to get the hull etc into good order, find and fit engines and gearboxes, new windscreen, hey presto into the water she goes.
If all works out then either a rolling restoration or back out of the water and install the interior.

My Mum and Dad restored a 100' schooner for PdS back in the mid 80's.

The hundred year old 32m 'Vagrant ' was pretty much a wreck when Peter bought and restored her at Antigua Slipway. The classic parts that made the yacht beautiful were restored to period both inside and on deck but things like electrics and mechanicals were of the best of the day. The trick is hiding the modern stuff so that all the flashing lights aren't the first thing you see.

Have a look at You Tube, "Sampson Boat Co" Restoring Tally Ho, approx 30 episodes of amazing work.
Yep i plan to keep Charleston reasonably period on the surface, nothing too fancy at the helm, possibly a pair of latish Perkins (engine bay is empty !) and see how we get on.
The forward cabin has been changed quite a bit, to a curved day saloon, unfortunately there is extensive damage, the Starboard side has some serious rot where the window has been leaking , most of the interior has been removed , the hull , transom etc has some work needed, the top-sides are quite poor as well, i think we have just caught her before another winter finished the job.

I have loved the Fairey boats for about 40 odd years, I was searching the internet and found the Charleston in a yard near Axminster, but was not sure how old the advert was. I did request info, but nothing forthcoming.

Ah, right, I had a hand in her sale from Alderney about 15 years back to Axminster and then to the current chap that started this thread about 5 years ago, restoration is well underway.

If you want a Fairey boat I can help.
 
So sad to see this.

When I was very young my father worked for Peter De Savary. He allowed us to use Charleston which was then called Chaperone (not “Chaparon” or “Chaparone to Frigate” as I have seen quoted elsewhere) almost any time he wasn’t using it. It was a wonderful boat and I have many fond memories of trips out to Studland and to the Solent.

I really hope someone picks up this restoration.
