Our VHF set started behaving strangely at the weekend. It's a Simrad, probably of mid or late 90s vintage. First we noticed that we had not heard any of the usual traffic for about an hour, the set was powered on but the display was blank. Switching the power on and off brought back the display but there was a continuous hiss and the squelch control was ineffective.

The question is whether it is worth spending time and money trying to get this set repaired, or would a repalcement make more sense. I can easily imagine a repair costing as much as the £100 or so that an equivalent new set would cost. Thoughts and experiences welcome.

My own Simrad RD68 has failed for the third time so it was taken to the technician with the instructions not to repair if the cost is higher than €25 or so.These days a good VHF can be bought for about £120 .

Ahem, I did mention your lack of vhf response a month or so ago.

May I suggest trying it with a clean 12v feed and another aerial - you do have an emergency/alternative aerial don't you? If that makes no difference I do have a working ICOM yin that is now secondary to a wonderfully belled and whistled DSC yin with built in AIS. Ian can barter with me in Oban on the 17th.
