Can I make a plea for others not to be so damning when events are discussed without knowing the facts.

Often threads are far more informative when discussed without the facts as then possible senarios are speculated and possible actions suggested.

Once we are down to facts any discussion is limited to the exact unique circumstances to that event.

The recent thread Rocks, girlfriend has bought up many points and made many look carefully at the wording of their policy in addition that the speculation may have made a number realise problems with waypoints and the effect of a gybe on an autohelm.

Those that condemn such speculation limit the spread of knowledge. However I do agree with criticism of any posts that attribute blame and suggest certain people are idiots where the facts are not know.

Lets not go back to the time where people were persecuted for theories and speculation. After all someone once suggested the earth was round and circled the sun in contravention of all held beliefs and the written word of that time!!

I agree with you there. The Forum Police get very active when other than the gravest and most handwringing posts are offered.

Mind you, I reckon you're pissing in the wind because there is a whole army of lurkers out there ready to pounce on a single note of dissent or an alternative view.

There is, apparently, a secret rule book of accepted behaviour in the case of instances of others' immoral, illegal or moronic behaviour leading to untimely demises.
I've scoured Amazon, but can't find a copy.

Stands back to await flash of lightning

Sounds as if you're talking of the Darwin Awards - people who significantly improve the gene pool by removing themselves from it. Plenty of books on Amazon! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

well put sir!

part of the problem inevitably stems from those who, through reading in threaded mode, do not see the chronological posts - and those in flat mode missing some of the nuances of who is poling at whom; and why!

I now realise that, like many who contributed to the thread, I completely missed the point with my posts but pormise to try better next time.

Magari...

Is sort of Italian for if only

The earth is an oblate spheroid and we go round the sun in an ellipse as any fule kno

[/ QUOTE ]

The olblate spheroid is a precise mathematical model, but mother nature is full of non-mathematical surprises. It's much better to consider our planet a geoid, where the surface more realistically follows the King Edward spud we live on than a speroid

IMHO, natch

That's just daft! Anyone with an eye to see can tell you the sun rises and sets every day - it goes round us. Obvious....

Go into any RYA class on astro-navigation, and they're discussing the Celestial Sphere, with us at the centre, and everything else spinning round us. Innit? Go the London Planetarium, what d'you see? "The Wheeling Stars...."

And as for the shape of the earth, it's flat and held up at the corners by giant elephants.

I know peeps once thought the earth was round, and they made their globe-maps round then, to match, but nowadays the Hydrographic Office knows better and all our maps and charts are flat. Right? Even the electronic charts are designed to display correctly on flat screens, so what's all this guff about globes and geoids and conical orthomorphic projections.

Don't the scientists tell us we must believe what our senses tell us, what is observable - like the sun rising and setting every day - and reject ideas-stuff that is just 'invented' by some academics who are just after more research grants?

If God had wanted a round earth, he wouldn't have permitted good religious leaders like Paul Kruger to maintain the International Flat Earth Society for so long, now would he?

You're trying to poison young impressionable minds, you are, and this stuff is all a load of 'spheroids'.

Not quite true, The elephants have to stand well in from the edges, because they all have to stand on the back of the giant turtle!

What does the turtle stand on?
Its turtles all the way down, any fule kno.
