We are in Spain at the moment generally heading east. Before the big off in 2007/8 we will need to change the standing rigging, recork the teak decks and replace 5 windows in the hard top. The skill levls required need to be quite high. Does anyone know what the availability and price are like for major refit work in either Greece or Turkey.

No personal experience but I recall that Rod Heikell had new teak laid in Turkey a couple of years ago and spoke highly of quality and price. You might try a search through YM archives for his articles.

Good friends have just arrived in Marmaris and give great reports. 7 euro a day for 14 metre and 900 for the winter. We are in La Manga at present and will winter in Lagos this year. Marmaris looks good for next year.

We are based in Corfu's Gouvia Marina where we have had work done and to a very high standard. To give an example, two coats of antifoul & new anodes, €520 inclusive of paint and materials on a 44ft boat. We had some gelcoat repairs done a couple of years ago by the same people and the repair is totally undetectable. The rigger there too is reported by others to be very good and there is a resident Brit upholsterer/cover maker who has done a couple of jobs for us to a high standard and charged sensibly.

The marina will want it's commission though (if they find out).

You can get all this done in Preveza/Levkas/Nidri area in Greece.
I can recommend the Brits at IGR Yacht services behind the Athos Hotel
in Nidri, Levkas who will put you in touch with the right people.
IGR cut new windows themselves and a good rigging firm in Preveza
whose name IGR will give you will cut and fit your new rigging.

We have just spent the winter in Marmaris Yat Marine . We had a quote for our for'd and aft spreaders and cap shrouds and was quoted 500 euros for the wire (6 MM) and fittings and 900 euros to fit (14 hours at 65 euros) Needless to say we didn't go ahead (8.5mtr boat).

Turkey used to be cheap but now we find that you pay european prices for turkish workmanship.

We have friends who have had their teak deck replaced they say at reasonable cost but you have to be here supervising otherwise its tomorrow tomorrow etc.

Stainless steel work is reasonable and quick provided you don't leave it till March/April to order.

Other places in turkey may be cheaper but check it out before you come.

We are currently in Marmaris Yacht Marine and having work done - mainly steel. The quality of work we have seen done on boats here is good but it is definitely much closer to European prices than third world. Shopping around is essential. Some friends have hauled out in Yalikavak (sp?), Bodrum for osmosis treatment etc. Price was very good.

Good luck!
